What's The Difference Between Mouth to Lung and Direct to Lung?

Posted by phoebe guo on

When you try to buy a vape kit online, you will often come across such items as mouth to lung, direct to lung  or  sub ohm tank. What on the earth do they mean?

What is mouth to lung ?

Mouth to lung (or MTL for short) refers to hold the vapor in your mouth and then breathe it into your lungs. Smokers will be used to mouth to lung vaping, since it’s a similar process to smoking cigarettes. This is because of the way smokers have to suck in the smoke from cigarettes and gather it in their mouth before they can inhale the smoke into their lungs. With this vaping, you can have the smoking experience and a more satisfying throat hit and nicotine hit.

Simple steps on how you vape mouth to lung.

  • Take a smooth draw of vapour into the mouth. (Don’t take short, sharp drags like you would on a cigarette) A slightly longer draw is needed.
  • Once vapour is in the mouth inhale to lungs drawing air in at the same time.
  • Exhale

What is direct to lung?

Direct to lung  (DTL) is when you inhale the vapour directly into your lungs, without holding it in your mouth first. on the other hand, bypasses the mouth and goes straight to your lungs. Direct to lung inhale can also be known as straight to lung inhale.

Most people don’t vape like this when they start out, but it becomes popular in recent years due to the rise in hobby vaping and cloud chasing. If you try direct to lung inhale, you’ll find that you need to go with a low nicotine or nicotine-free (ie 3mg or even 0mg) vape juice, becouse the nicotine will hit you in a more direct way, and a high nicotine strength (or high PG strength) could make you cough or feel unpleasant.

You’ll also want to find an ejuice with a high VG level, which means less PG (and therefore less of a lung hit) but a lot more cloud. A kit with air flow (you can adjust air flow to satisfy your needs) is also great for direct to lung inhale.

Simple steps on how you vape direct to lung.

  • Draw slow and steady directly into your lungs.
  • A drag DTL style can be 3-5 seconds or more.
  • The key is not to take sharp drags.. Smooth, steady motion is the key.
  • Once it reaches your lungs exhale those clouds of vapour.

What e juice is best for MTL vaping?

Typically, when mouth to lung vaping, most vapers use an ejuice with a high PG (propylene glycol) ratio. This gives a satisfactory throat hit and is also more suited for the devices used for mouth to lung vaping. Black Note Virginia tobacco sets, with its 50-50 VG:PG ratio, is ideal.

Which PG/VG Ratio Is Best For MTL Vapers

This section needs paying attention to. Choosing the wrong PG/VG ratio for first time users can make or break an experience. PG and VG are two of the main vape ingredients in e juice.

  • PG – Propylene Glycol
  • VG – Vegetable Glycerin

As far as PG and VG go, the devices which support MTL hits are generally only suited to a higher PG content.

I have seen many a time new vapers buying 80% and 90% VG juices for their new vape pen starter kits and then blaming the devices for continual dry hitting.

It’s generally not the devices fault, as VG is a thicker consistency (PG is thinner) that can have trouble wicking in the smaller MTL coils. PG is also known to be a good flavour carrier.

Also, because this method is considered as a suitable smoking replacement…the throat hit from PG e juice will probably seem more satisfactory to this type of vape.

A higher nicotine strength I’ve found can also be a main contributor to increased throat hit.

Recommended PG/VG Ratios for Mouth To Lung Devices
  • 50PG/50VG – Good throat hit – vapour productionok
  • 60VG/40PG – A smoother vape – Vapour production better
  • 70VG/30PG – Some of the more recent MTL devices vape well

What e juice is best for DTL vaping?

When you direct to lung vape, you usually use an e-juice with a higher VG (vegetable glycerin) ratio. This gives a smoother vape with more vapour, and does not hurt the throat despite the larger clouds. Typical VG:PG ratios vary, but 70:30 VG:PG and 80:20 VG:PG ratios are common. LIQUA ejuice offers 35:65 VG:PG for your choice.

Recommended PG/VG Ratios for Direct To Lung Devices

The below is a general guideline. A lot of the experiences you have with flavour and vapour production can also depend on the specific e-liquid brand you choose.

  • 60VG/40PG – Very good flavor, decent cloud production and a hint of throat hit.
  • 70VG/30PG – One of the most popular blends for sub ohm/DTL vapes. Good flavor, plenty of clouds and smooth throat hit.
  • 80VG/20PG – Good flavor, dense clouds and silky smooth throat hit.
  • 90VG/10PG – Good flavor, even denser clouds and smooth on the throat.
  • 100% VG– Pure clouds and super smooth.

However,it’s up to you to decide whether you prefer mouth to lung or direct to lung vaping. MTL vaping offers a better throat hit than DTL vaping does, which of course simulates the sensation that smokers are used to. You’ll also find that MTL vaping makes your ejuice last longer than it would if you were DTL vaping. Because of the action of a MTL vape is similar to cigarette smoking, this is often a good way to vape for most everyday vapers, and it’s the best method to start with if you’re trying to quit tobacco cigarettes. While DTL vaping is great if you want to produce great vapour clouds.  Or, you can stock up on both types of devices and switch it up whenever you want.
